Without a doubt, the Cohiba brand is the flagship of the cigar industry — developed initially as a medium bodied protocol cigar for presentation only by officials of the Cuban government, Cohiba was marketed widely beginning in 1982. The initial sizes were the Lancero, the Corona Especiale and the Panetela, with the Esplendido, Robusto and Exquisito added in 1989. In 1992, in salute to the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of the Caribbean, the Siglo series was introduced.

I recently smoked the Siglo II (5.25 inches x 42 ring), a petit corona and was truly blown away. This is perhaps the very best of its class i’ve ever smoked, and only the Montecristo #4 comes anywhere close.

The first thing about this cigar that’ll strike you like a baseball bat is its scent — a fantastic, fresh tobacco aroma that is almost undescribable. Hints of freshly cut grass, mixed with spicy touches of cedar and wood. Amazing; definitely a cigar to “sneeze on”!

The pinch test is almost perfect — a well humidifed Cohiba represents the benchmark of the perfectly constructed cigar. Just nicely firm under the touch, with a wealth of oils. Its has some very minor veins running along it, its easy to tell the tobacco used is top class. Outstanding!

After minutes of admiring its construction and breathing in its deep aroma, i took the torch to it, and it lit easily. The draw is very good — a nice, steady firmness about it. Perfect. From the first draw onwards, the unique taste that is Cohiba is very evident: a remarkably fine balance of creamy beans flavours with a “grassy-wood” finish. Its perhaps a bit milder (as was intended) than the regular range of Cohiba cigars in terms of strength and some of the herbal notes. Every draw of smoke is an experience in itself, Cohiba-style. And the finish, oh the finish, let me tell you, is absolutely incredible. Its something to write home about, let me assure you.

Verdict: This cigar has absolutely NO FLAWS. Fantastic construction, fantastic leaf quality, fantastic taste and a marvelous finish. Give yourself 60 minutes of pleasure with this little baby; you won’t regret it. My Cigar Blog’s highest recommendation.
